I qualified as an employment law solicitor in the last century (just) and since then, have enjoyed advising on all aspects of employment law, both contentious and non-contentious. Whilst I now act mainly for employers, I have found the experience of advising individuals invaluable in understanding and anticipating behaviours and perspectives from both sides.
My clients have come from many sectors, including retail, haulage, manufacturing and charities.
I pride myself on giving easy to understand, practical advice, avoiding legal jargon wherever possible and focusing on the client's priorities and desired outcomes; then working together to best achieve them. Most of all I think it is important to simply get on, particularly when advising over potentially stressful or challenging situations, and I love nothing more than clients feeling comfortable enough to pick up the phone with a "silly question" which can save significant time and costs further down the line.
Throughout my career I have enjoyed training and presenting seminars, in conjunction with CIPD and other organizations and find that the process of simplifying and finding key lessons from often complex points of law, is helpful in day to day advising. My academic interest in the law contributed to my being a past external examiner for the College of Law in Chester, but my focus remains on the practical application of the law and not on citing statutes and cases. Employment law, perhaps more than any other area of the law, is often about presenting a range of options, each with associated levels of risk and helping guide clients to make informed decisions that best suit their objectives.
After gaining a law degree from Christ's College Cambridge, I qualified as a solicitor with Kingsley Napley in the City of London, where I remained for a couple of years before moving "up North" permanently and working for the first time with Simon Ost and Nick Jones at the Manchester office of Hammond Suddards Edge (as was). From there I joined and later headed, the employment team at Chester firm Aaron & Partners, where I became a partner in 2004. Following a brief absence from the Law (during which time I ran a small company, chaired a pre-school and concentrated on motherhood) it's great to be back doing what I do best and working with first rate lawyers again. I believe that parenthood has contributed significantly to the Legal 500's description of me as "Calm, Practical and Re-assuring" valuable skills honed when dealing with the demands of toddlers!
